Byeongjin Kim[김병진], a Ph.D. candidate of Color Lab, had a presentation titled ‘Lighting Design for Product Personality Expression: A Study Utilizing Refrigerator’ at the 15th Asia Light Conference conducted in Seoul. He investigated the impact of lighting design in home appliances on the perceived personality. His study focused on how different lighting attributes, such as brightness levels, chromaticity, and form, can be manipulated to convey specific personality traits in products, using a refrigerator as a case study. By applying the Big Five personality traits model, he developed 24 unique lighting profiles through an orthogonal design approach to assess their influence on perceived personality and user preferences. The results demonstrated that lighting configurations play a critical role in shaping the personality of a product and significantly affect user perception and preference.
In recognition of his pioneering contributions to the field of lighting, Byeongjin was deservedly awarded the Best Student Award at the 15th ALC2024.
Abstract
Product design encompasses diverse elements that should be carefully planned and aligned with the designer’s intended concept. This study highlights lighting as a crucial formative element and aims to establish guidelines for embedding desired characteristics through lighting. Employing the Big Five personality traits, this research investigates how various lighting design attributes influence the perceived personality of a product. These attributes include two brightness levels, four chromaticity, and five forms. Using an orthogonal design approach, 24 lighting design profiles were created. The assessment applied these profiles to a refrigerator to evaluate perceived personality and user preferences. The findings confirmed that lighting configurations significantly impact product personality and user preferences. These results underline the importance of considering product experience and the role of lighting in design decisions.
